Spring Training Update

Delwyn Young continued to make a strong push for a spot as a utility/pinch-hit specialist on the Pirates' roster yesterday, mashing his sixth homer of the spring in the Buccos' 6-4 loss to the Red Sox. Young is hitting .324 in Spring Training to go with 16 RBI - output that will be hard for Russell, Huntington & Co. to ignore when finalizing the Opening Day roster, especially given the squad's need for depth in the middle infield.

In other news, Octavio Dotel made his spring debut yesterday, throwing 12 balls in 22 pitches but escaping unscathed in one inning of work. He walked one batter, hit another and threw a wild pitch, but did not yield a run. Dotel projects to be the closer when the Pirates open the season.

Earlier this week, Zach Duke was named Opening Day starter in an altogether unsurprising move. Duke was one of the team's All-Star representatives last season, and has earned the title despite an uneven spring.
